Andalusia is the most photogenic region in Spain, perhaps in Europe. Five years of guiding Thai pre-wedding shoots here has given me a working list of locations that consistently produce stunning albums. Here are the five I send couples to first.
1. Plaza de España, Sevilla — at dawn
The single most-used pre-wedding location in Spain, and for good reason. Built in 1929 for the Ibero-American Exposition, the semi-circular plaza is a marriage of Renaissance Revival and Moorish architecture: tiled bridges, golden masonry, blue and yellow ceramics.
The trick is timing. By 9am the plaza is full of tourists. We bring couples at 6am — empty arches, soft golden light, no one in your frame. The shoot is done by 8am, then breakfast at the nearby Hotel Alfonso XIII.
2. Real Alcázar de Sevilla
The royal palace next to Sevilla cathedral. Game of Thrones fans recognise it as Dorne. Layered Moorish, Mudéjar and Gothic architecture, with cathedral-scale gardens.
Photography permits are required for commercial pre-wedding shoots — €120 per session, must be requested 30 days in advance. We handle this for our couples. The Patio de las Doncellas is the iconic spot; the Galerías del Grutesco is the secret one.
3. The Alhambra, Granada — sunset hour
The Alhambra interior does not allow tripods or commercial shoots. But the views OF the Alhambra from the Albaicín neighbourhood are spectacular at sunset.
The famous viewpoint is Mirador de San Nicolás — but it is now overrun. The local secret: walk 200 metres up the hill to Mirador de San Miguel Alto. Same view, fraction of the people. Pair this with a flamenco evening in the Sacromonte caves for the rest of the day.
4. Setenil de las Bodegas — the dramatic backdrop
A village built INTO the cliffs, with whitewashed houses tucked under overhanging rock. Almost no one outside Andalusia knows about it. We use it for couples who want a more dramatic, unique frame than the classical Sevilla shots.
Best photographed late afternoon when the rock catches the orange sun. There is one excellent restaurant for lunch (Bar La Tasca) — book ahead, only twelve tables.
5. The white villages of Cádiz
Frigiliana, Mijas, Vejer de la Frontera. Cobbled lanes, blinding white walls, geraniums in pots, doors painted blue. Simple, romantic, and remarkably empty mid-week.
For couples wanting a softer, less architectural feel, this is the answer. We pair this with a beach session at the Atlantic coast (Tarifa or Bolonia) for variety in the album.
How we structure a five-day pre-wedding shoot
Our standard Andalusia pre-wedding journey is five days. Day 1: arrival in Madrid, rest, evening light test. Day 2: travel to Sevilla, dawn shoot at Plaza de España, lunch, afternoon at Real Alcázar. Day 3: travel to Granada, sunset Mirador session. Day 4: white villages or Setenil, depending on couple preference. Day 5: Lisbon farewell session and departure.
